Norman Lewis, the sole African-American Abstract Expressionist of his generation, holds a pivotal place in art history. Despite his undeniable talent and political involvement, he faced significant obstacles due to racial prejudice. His work was often overlooked by White and Black art dealers alike. Yet, Lewis's resilience led him to create powerful works such as "Migrating Birds" (1953), "America the Beautiful" (1960), and "Twilight Sounds" (1962) that challenged societal norms.
