Originally written and compiled by Carter G. Woodson, founder of the ASALH, this historic Black history timeline reflects ASALH’s early mission to document, preserve, and disseminate the achievements of African Americans.
Created in 1936—ten years after the founding of Negro History Week—the poster represents an early effort to formalize and expand the teaching of Black history nationwide.
The original artistic design was created by Loïs Mailou Jones, one of the most influential artists of the Harlem Renaissance and a leading figure in Black visual culture and arts education.
