Alma Thomas, a pioneering African American artist, significantly contributed to Black history through her abstract art. Born in 1891, she began her artistic journey after retiring from education. Her vibrant use of color, inspired by nature, set her apart. In 1972, she became the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum, paving the way for future generations of Black artists.
