Collection: Juneteenth
Juneteenth (short for June Nineteenth) marks the day — June 19, 1865 — when enslaved people in Galveston were finally informed that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued.
On that day, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas and announced General Order No. 3, enforcing the end of slavery in the last Confederate state where it had not yet been implemented.
Juneteenth is both a celebration of freedom and a recognition of the delay, resistance, and ongoing struggle for true equality that followed. It honors Black resilience, history, and culture, and is now recognized as a federal holiday in the United States.
